SMT General Development trends and Stages

        The general development trend of SMT is that the components are getting smaller and smaller, the assembly density is getting higher and higher, and the assembly difficulty is becoming more and more difficult.

       In recent years, SMT has entered the most exciting part of a new development. In order to further adapt to the development of electronic equipment in the direction of short, small, light and thin, new packaging components such as 0210 (0.6mm*0.3mm) CHIP first year, BGA, CSP, FLIP, CHIP, composite chip components and so on have emerged.

       Due to the development of BGA and other components technology, the emergence of non-ODS cleaning and lead-free solder has led to changes in SMT equipment, welding materials, mounting and welding process, and promoted the development of electronic assembly technology to a higher stage.

Four Stages of SMT Development

The first stage (1960~1975): miniaturization, hybrid integrated circuits (calculators, quartz watches);

The second stage (1976~1980): reduce the volume and enhance the circuit function < camera, video recorder, digital camera >;

The third stage (1980~2019): reduce the cost, vigorously develop the production equipment, and improve the performance-to-price ratio of the products (very large-scale integrated circuits);

At the present stage (2019-to date): micro-assembly, high-density assembly, three-dimensional assembly;

Present Status of SMT Technology

        According to foreign reports, since the 1990s, the global electronic products using through-hole assembly technology are declining at the rate of annual ll%, while the electronic products using SMT are increasing at the rate of 8%. So far, more than 80% of electronic products in Japan, the United States and other countries have adopted SMT.

SMT Development Status

SMT Development in China Different Regions

       China's SMT/MES industry is mainly concentrated in the eastern coastal areas, such as Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Shandong, Tianjin, Beijing and Liaoning, these province and cities  have more than 80% of the total SMT/MES in the country.

      According to the region, the Pearl River Delta and its surrounding areas are the strongest, the Yangtze River Delta is the second, and the Bohai Rim area is the third. Although there is a large gap between the total SMT/MES of the Bohai Rim and the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta, the growth potential is huge and the development momentum is stronger.

       Relevant state departments announced that the Binhai New area in Tianjin will become the third pole of China's economic growth after Shenzhen and Shanghai Pudong. In the near future, China's SMT/MES industry is bound to form a tripod of Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta and Bohai Rim.

       The reason why China's SMT/MES industry has such a good situation is that the relevant departments of the Chinese government attach great importance to the development of electronic and information products manufacturing industry and formulate good development policies and introduction policies.

      The transfer of the electronic manufacturing industry to the mainland of China is an important factor in the developed countries and regions of the world's electronic and information products, such as the United States, Japan, South Korea, Europe and Taiwan of China.

Overall proportion and Development Analysis

       China's SMT industry is still mainly concentrated in the Pearl River Delta region and the Yangtze River Delta region, where industrial sales account for more than 90% of the total industrial scale, of which the Pearl River Delta region alone accounts for 67.5% of the total. In addition, the sales of the SMT industry around the Bohai Sea also reached 310 million yuan, accounting for 7.6% of the total industry.

      At the same time, we expect that in the next five years, China's SMT industry will still be mainly concentrated in the Yangtze River Delta region, the Pearl River Delta region and the Bohai Rim region. However, the share of the Yangtze River Delta in China's SMT industry will rise rapidly from 2019, reaching 43.9% in 2009. Although the proportion of the Pearl River Delta region has dropped to 47.0%, it still occupies the first place.

     In addition, the SMT industry around the Bohai Sea has also developed rapidly. The rapid growth of SMT industry in the Yangtze River Delta mainly comes from the transfer of global SMT industry, especially the transfer of placement machine production. From a historical point of view, the Yangtze River Delta region has a relatively strong foundation for the development of equipment manufacturing industry.

     At the same time, the manufacturing industry of notebooks, mobile phones and other high-end electronic products in the Yangtze River Delta region is relatively developed, coupled with the unique geographical advantages of the Yangtze River Delta region, so in the process of the transfer of the global SMT industry in 2019, the Yangtze River Delta region will undertake a large proportion.

    However, for the Pearl River Delta region, because its SMT industry has formed a relatively complete industrial chain and industrial supporting environment in the past few years, the Pearl River Delta region also has obvious advantages in undertaking industrial transfer.

Development Analysis

       From the perspective of the development cycle of the industry itself, although China's SMT industry is still in the early stage of development, it has shown great vitality. At the same time, SMT industry is also an important basic industry, which is of great significance to promote the structural adjustment and industrial upgrading of China's electronic information industry.

         Promoting the rapid and healthy development of China's SMT industry requires the cooperation of all aspects of the upstream and downstream of the industry.
